"Boat Loaded with Stones," Bosyu (1920), woodblock print reproduction by Kyoko Nakano.
Sawtooth Mountain, located in Chiba Prefecture, is a jagged mountain shaped like a saw.
There was a quarrying industry in Sawtooth Mountain from the Edo period until 1985.
The stone, called "Boshu-ishi," is made of volcanic tuff, which is easy to process, fire-resistant, and ideal for building materials. It was transported by ship to distant places.
Men quarried the stones, which women then transported by pushing carts weighing as much as 200 kg back and forth across the mountains.
This picture shows the stones being loaded onto the ship. Many ships ran aground during this process because they could not bear the weight, indicating that this was a life-threatening job.
The quarry site, which has a maximum vertical face of 96 meters, is called "Laputa's Wall" because of its spectacular scenery, reminiscent of Laputa, the castle in the sky.
