The Nikko Road is a highway that connects Tokyo to Nikko, a distance of about 140 km. It is one of the five generations of highways used for the Edo period (1603-1867). A woman carrying a basket on her back walks along the road lined with large cedar trees. The summer sunlight and the cool shade of the trees are refreshingly depicted in this tasteful work.
