A mythical being with a human head and a lion (sometimes winged) body. It originated in Egypt, but later spread to Syria, Anatolia, the Mediterranean world, and mainland Greece. In Egypt, the sphinx appears as early as the Fourth Dynasty (ca. 2650 BC) as the Great Sphinx carved alongside the pyramid of King Khafre at Gizeh. It is said to be an image of the king himself. The sphinx is said to have originated from the ancient Egyptian conception of the king as a lion, and the queen was also represented as a female sphinx. In the second millennium B.C., the sphinx was often believed to be an incarnation of a deity, such as the sun god.
Archaeological excavations have revealed that the sphinx was also revered in Anatolia, Syria, Palestine, and Cyprus from the middle of the 2nd millennium BC to the first half of the 1st millennium BC. Stone statues of the Sphinx were placed on both sides of gates (Aladja Hoyuk, Hatusha. circa 14th century BC), used as part of a structure (Karkemish, Samual. 9th - 8th century BC), and ivory reliefs and bronze statues were used as religious decorations (Cyprus, Samaria, Rusahiniri, etc.; 9th - 7th century BC). 9th - 7th century BCE). These are all winged (female?) statues and played a guardian (spirit) role. In Greece, the sphinx was first carved on shields and tombs for the purpose of exorcism, as a mythological figure watching over death, but later it was incorporated into the legend of Thebes and became famous.

Since the age of ukiyoe, woodblock prints have been created through the division of labor between the engraver, the slitter, and the painter.
Seeking the possibility of woodblock prints as a newer form of expression, Hiroshi Yoshida believed that if he was to use craftsmen, he himself had to be more than that, and he completed his own prints, which he himself engraved and printed.
