The Nikko Kaido is a highway that connects Tokyo to Nikko, a distance of about 140 km.
It was one of the five major highways used by the Edo period (1603-1867) to transport people from Tokyo to Nikko.A woman carrying a basket on her back is walking along the road lined with large cedar trees.
The midsummer sunlight and the cool shade of the trees are depicted in this tasteful work.
