和紙について試行錯誤の日々。

Days of trial and error with washi paper.

~Trial and error with washi paper~

The possibilities for washi paper seem endless!

Washi paper filled with the wonderful techniques of Japanese tradition

"I want to see him be more active in the modern world"

"I hope this technology doesn't die out."

I began to think this way after discovering washi paper.

I hope this will be of some help to those who are planning to start using washi paper in the future.

I decided to write about my experience.

Most of the artworks at the Haikara Museum are printed on washi paper.

The reason why I chose Japanese paper instead of Western paper is

This is because Japanese paintings were originally painted on silk or washi paper.

Since woodblock prints are printed on washi paper, it is natural that they need to be reproduced.

It was washi paper.

First, as a clue

Find washi paper from various regions online

I repeatedly bought and printed.

Some manufacturers sell sample packs containing a variety of different types.

I wasted a lot of paper and ink,

It is very important to choose the right paper for your work.

I realized that.

Each type of washi paper surface has its own unique characteristics.

It can be rough or smooth.

The muscles may be deep or there may be no muscles at all.

The softness and color are different.

In addition,

The color and condition of the ingredients vary depending on the time.

I also knew it would be a big change.

When I print it

"Can the same picture change so much depending on the paper?"

The finished look is surprisingly different.

I compared many different types in order to achieve the most beautiful painting possible.

I also tried expensive products such as handmade Japanese paper for printing photographs.

I can't try everything, but

"Enough is enough"

I tried it as much as I could.

I ordered the same paper from a certain company several times.

Every time I order it, the color and thickness is different.

I wanted to make it the same as the previous print,

"The thickness and color are different from last time. Can I have the same thing as before?"

I inquired to the manufacturing company.

Then I was asked to send a picture.

If you send us a comparison photo,

My point was conveyed from the president to the craftsman.

The next day, the craftsmen checked all the washi paper in the warehouse.

They picked out ones of the same color and condition.

We had the difficult task of inspecting the entire warehouse.

The work ethic of Japanese craftsmen was beyond my imagination.

Finally, the president explained it to me.

"The natural environment and climate change

Due to the decline in the quality of paper mulberry

I realized that I can no longer make good quality washi paper like I used to.

The craftsmen are also concerned,

Regarding certain types of washi paper,

Should it be discontinued or not?

I always have problems with the craftsmen.

Without compromise, we cannot continue, and that is the reality of washi manufacturing."

That's how he explained it to me.

I said what the craftsman was most concerned about.

I felt sorry.

I'm glad to know how serious the craftsmen are and how hard they work.

That's how I felt.

There are many thoughts and feelings that come from working for many years.

The seriousness and commitment

This is reflected in the beauty of washi paper.

What has brought me closer to my understanding?

That was an important factor in making the choice.
